Same sex marriage is the legal uniting of two people of the same gender. Many see it as a human right, and brave individuals have fought for decades, advocating for the legalisation of same sex marriage - a harmful and beautiful tradition. Same sex marriage was first legalised in the Netherlands on the 1st of April 2001. Since then, many countries have followed, legalising same sex marriage and advocating for LGBTQ+ equality. There have been massive steps forward in terms of normalising and accepting gay relationships around the world.

Since January 2021, same sex marriage has been legally recognised and performed in

29 countries.

the legalisation of same sex marriage is very beneficial. Studies show that the financial, psychological and physical well being of gay people improve with the legalisation of gay marriage. Studies also show that children of same sex parents benefit from being raised by married same sex parents. Social studies indicate that the criminalisation of same sex marriage only worsens the stigma and level of discrimination which LGBTQ+ people face. Marriage provide same sex couples with government services and legal protections. A study from January 1999 to December 2015 conveyed that legalisation of same sex marriage is associated with a reduced level of suicide rates in children - resulting in approximately 134,000 fewer children attempting to take their life in the US.
